Medical Uses of Amla, Its Benefits and Chemical Constituents

Amla is biologically known as Phyllanthus Emblica. It consists of the dried and fresh fruits of the plant, Emblica Officinalis, which belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae. We see Amla is a small or medium tree that grows in deciduousious forests of India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.

Minerals like iron, calcium, and phosphorous are also present in amla. Pectin is also present in amla fruits. As the fresh fruits contain more amount of moisture, they are to be dried and stored.

Amla is widely used in Indian medicine for a long time due to its natural medicinal uses and health benefits.

  • Amla has an acrid (strong) taste and smell.
  • It has diuretic properties.
  • Amla is used as a laxative.
  • Dried amla fruits can be used for treating diarrhea and dysentery.
  •  Amla can be administered for dyspepsia and jaundice.
  • It can be administered in anemia along with iron compounds.
  • Amla fruits are used in the preparation of shampoos, hair oils like (Dabur Amla Hair oil) and inks.
  • It is used in the preparation of henna as they promote hair growth.
  • Seeds of amla can be used in the treatment of bronchitis and asthma.
  • Amla has anti-viral properties.
  • The leaves of the amla tree are used as fodder.
  • This is one of the ingredients of Chyawanprash and Triphala.
  • Amla fruits have anti-aging properties due to the presence of ascorbic acid.
